DVSA Driving Test Booking Changes 2026: A Step by Step Guide for Kent Learners

Your driving instructor can no longer book your test for you. The DVSA driving test booking changes 2026 have shifted the entire process onto the learner, and a lot of Kent drivers are panicking about what to do next.
This guide walks you through every rule change, every date, and exactly how to book your own test on GOV.UK. It also explains what the new “three nearest centres” rule means if you learn to drive anywhere in Kent or Medway.
By the end, you will know what changed, when it changed, and what you personally need to do.
What are the DVSA driving test booking changes in 2026?
The DVSA driving test booking changes 2026 are three new rules that move control of test bookings to the learner. They limit how many times you can change a booking, ban third parties from booking on your behalf, and restrict where you can move your test to.
At a glance:
- 31 March 2026: the number of times you can change a booking dropped from six to two.
- 12 May 2026: only the learner can book, change, swap or cancel a test.
- 9 June 2026: test centre changes are restricted to the three nearest centres.
The DVSA introduced these rules to stop bots and resellers from blocking real learners out of test slots. Your instructor still has a role. It has just changed.
The three key dates Kent learners need to know
Each date locks in a different change. You need to know all three because they affect different parts of the booking process.
31 March 2026: fewer changes allowed per booking
Before this date, you could change your test up to six times. From 31 March 2026, you only get two changes.
A change means moving the date, the time, or the test centre. Use them carefully. If you burn both early, you are locked in for the rest of the booking.
12 May 2026: only learners can book or manage a test
From 12 May 2026, no one other than the learner driver can book or manage a car driving test. This includes driving instructors, parents, friends and any third party booking service. According to the DVSA, services that ignore this rule are no longer operating lawfully.
You also have to tick a declaration confirming you are the learner taking the test. False declarations breach the booking terms.
9 June 2026: test centre changes restricted to three nearest
From 9 June 2026, if you want to move your test to a different centre, you can only pick one of the three nearest centres to your current booking.
The old trick of booking a quiet rural centre and swapping to a busy city centre no longer works. Pick a centre you actually plan to use.
Can my driving instructor still book my test for me?
No. From 12 May 2026, only the learner named on the provisional licence can book or manage a DVSA practical driving test.
Your instructor is not out of the picture though. They can still do three important things:
- Confirm test readiness. They tell you when your driving is at test standard.
- Share their personal reference number (PRN). You enter this during booking so you only see slots they can take you to.
- Set their availability. Through the DVSA’s availability management service, instructors control which days and times appear on your booking screen.
At Kinetic Driving School, instructors will sit with you while you book if you want the support. The rules say only you can press the button. They do not say you have to do it alone.
How to book your DVSA driving test in 2026
Follow these seven steps to book your car practical test on GOV.UK. The whole process takes around 10 minutes if you have your details ready.
Before you start, have these to hand:
- Your GB provisional driving licence number
- Your theory test pass certificate number
- Your instructor’s personal reference number (PRN)
- A debit or credit card for the £62 fee
- Your own email address and mobile number
Step by step booking process
- Check you are ready. Speak to your instructor and ask if your driving is at test standard. Get their PRN at the same time.
- Go to GOV.UK. Visit gov.uk/book-driving-test and start the practical driving test service.
- Enter your licence details. Type in your GB provisional driving licence number when prompted.
- Enter your theory pass details. Add your theory test pass certificate number to confirm you are eligible.
- Add your instructor’s PRN. This is optional but recommended. The system will only show slots your instructor is free for.
- Choose a centre and date. Pick a Kent test centre you have actually driven around. Avoid centres you plan to swap away from later.
- Pay and confirm. Pay the £62 fee, tick the declaration that you are the learner, and save your booking reference number.
Save your booking reference number somewhere safe. You need it to view or change your test later.
Driving test centres in Kent and the three nearest rule
There are eight DVSA driving test centres in Kent: Ashford, Canterbury, Folkestone, Gillingham, Herne Bay, Maidstone, Sevenoaks and Tunbridge Wells.
From 9 June 2026, if you want to move your test, you can only switch to one of the three centres nearest to your current booking. The DVSA decides what counts as nearest, based on distance from your booked centre.
Likely nearest centres for each Kent test centre
Use this as a rough guide. Confirm the live options on GOV.UK when you book, because nearest is calculated by the system.
| Booked centre | Likely nearest alternatives |
| Ashford | Folkestone, Canterbury, Maidstone |
| Canterbury | Herne Bay, Ashford, Folkestone |
| Folkestone | Ashford, Canterbury, Herne Bay |
| Gillingham | Herne Bay, Maidstone, Sevenoaks |
| Herne Bay | Canterbury, Gillingham, Ashford |
| Maidstone | Gillingham, Tunbridge Wells, Ashford |
| Sevenoaks | Tunbridge Wells, Gillingham, Maidstone |
| Tunbridge Wells | Sevenoaks, Maidstone, Ashford |
Worked example. You live in Tonbridge but book a test at Sheppey thinking you will swap to Tunbridge Wells when a slot opens up. After 9 June 2026, that swap is blocked. You either travel to Sheppey or lose the booking.
Book a centre you have practised around. If you take driving lessons in Maidstone or Tunbridge Wells, book your test where you actually drive.
What if my instructor already booked my test before 12 May?
Your booking is still valid. You do not need to rebook. You do need to make sure your own email address is on the booking before 12 May 2026.
If your instructor’s email is on file, you will not receive booking updates after that date. The DVSA will only send communications to the learner.
How to update your email on a booking
- Ask your instructor for your booking reference number. This is your personal data and they must give it to you.
- Go to gov.uk/check-driving-test and sign in with your licence number and booking reference.
- Select Change next to Candidate details.
- Replace the email with your own and save.
Updating your email does not use one of your two allowed changes. You can still do this even if you have used both changes already.
How Kinetic helps Kent learners through the new booking process
The DVSA rules say only you can book your test. Kinetic instructors guide you up to that point and stay with you through every lesson afterwards.
Here is what that looks like in practice:
- Honest readiness checks. Your instructor tells you when your driving is at test standard, not before. Booking too early wastes a change.
- Instructor PRN ready to use. Every Kinetic instructor gives you their personal reference number so the booking system only shows slots they can take you to.
- Centre advice across all eight Kent test centres. Kinetic instructors deliver tests at Ashford, Canterbury, Folkestone, Gillingham, Herne Bay, Maidstone, Sevenoaks and Tunbridge Wells. They know which centre suits your driving.
- Support during the booking itself. If you want a hand sitting alongside you while you book, your instructor can talk you through every screen.
Kinetic has helped thousands of learners pass across Kent and Medway. See the full list of Kent practical test centres Kinetic covers, or read the driving test changes advice page for more on what the new rules mean for you.
Ready to book your test the right way?
The rules have changed but your route to passing has not. You still need solid lessons, a clear head on test day, and an instructor who tells you the truth about when you are ready.
If you want a Kent driving school that guides you through the new booking process step by step, talk to a Kinetic instructor. Your first block of three lessons is £96, saving you £15 on the standard rate.
Still unsure which Kent test centre is the right one for you? Ask your instructor before you book. It is the single best decision you will make.
